Join us for a continuing education event featuring two guest speakers and two distinct clinical perspectives on the people our treatment models too often overlook: the families surrounding the patient, and the men who never fully enter care. Mental health and substance use disorders affect not only the individual receiving treatment but the entire family system. Family members may experience fear, anger, guilt, frustration, caregiver fatigue, and uncertainty about how to appropriately support their loved one. At the same time, men’s mental health remains one of the most significant blind spots in clinical practice today. Men die by suicide at nearly four times the rate of women, yet they are diagnosed with depression less often, screen lower on standard measures, and disengage from treatment earlier than any other demographic. Together, these two sessions give behavioral health professionals practical, research informed tools for engaging the people who are hardest to reach and easiest to lose. Participants will leave with communication strategies, engagement frameworks, and environmental changes they can apply immediately in individual and group settings.

OBJECTIVES: After this workshop, you will be able to:
1. Identify common emotional, behavioral, and relational responses experienced by families of individuals receiving treatment for mental health and substance use disorders.
2. Describe how family dynamics, communication patterns, and caregiver stress can influence the treatment and recovery process.
3. Apply practical communication and psychoeducation strategies when working with families during treatment, transition, and recovery.
4. Identify at least three externalizing symptom patterns (irritability, risk-taking, escalating substance use) associated with male-typical depression that standard screeners often miss.
5. Describe how traditional face-to-face, disclosure-first session structures can function as barriers to engagement for male clients,

Session 1 by Dr.Yudell: Helping Families Navigate Treatment and Recovery This workshop provides behavioral health professionals with practical strategies for helping families navigate
the treatment and recovery process. Participants will explore common family responses to mental health and substance use disorders, effective communication and psychoeducation strategies,
healthy boundaries, caregiver wellbeing, and ways to help families support recovery without assuming responsibility for the patient’s recovery.

Session 2 by Daniel Rubin: Rethinking How We Reach Men in Treatment This workshop examines why our field’s default clinical models, from diagnostic screening tools to session structure to therapeutic language, were built around presentations that do not match how many men actually experience and express psychological distress. Drawing on clinical experience in addiction recovery and men’s intensive outpatient treatment, this session offers clinicians a practical, research informed framework for recognizing externalizing depression, restructuring engagement strategies, and building therapeutic environments, both individual and group, that men are more likely to enter and stay in.

David A. Yudell, Psy.D. is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist and Founder of Ascend Psychology, providing comprehensive psychological services to individuals and families throughout Broward and southern Palm Beach County. Dr. Yudell earned his Doctorate and Master’s Degree in Clinical Psychology from Nova Southeastern University and a Master’s Degree in Counseling from Seton Hall University. Dr. Yudell has extensive experience working with children, adolescents, adults, and families across a wide range of emotional, behavioral, and developmental concerns. His work emphasizes practical, evidence-based interventions, effective communication, and helping families better understand and support their loved ones while maintaining healthy boundaries and their own well-being.
Daniel Rubin, LMHC, LPC, is the founder of Transcend Counseling & Consulting and co- founder of Transcend Wellness, a men’s-only Intensive Outpatient Program in South Florida. With over 15 years of clinical experience specializing in men’s mental health and addiction recovery, Daniel has built his practice around a core belief: men are not unreachable — they are underserved by treatment models that weren’t built with them in mind. He speaks and trains clinicians nationally on engagement strategies, masculine-informed clinical care, and integrated approaches to men’s mental health and addiction treatment.
