Gambling problems can be difficult to identify in clinical practice. Unlike substance use disorders, Gambling Disorder may develop without obvious physical signs of intoxication or impairment, and clients may conceal gambling behavior until significant financial, emotional, occupational, or relationship consequences have developed.
The increasing accessibility of online gambling and sports betting has also changed the ways individuals engage with gambling, making it increasingly important for behavioral health professionals to ask appropriate questions and recognize potential warning signs.
This asynchronous continuing education course introduces participants to the identification, assessment, and screening of problematic gambling and Gambling Disorder.
Participants will examine the continuum from recreational gambling to problem gambling and Gambling Disorder; common risk factors and warning signs; similarities and differences between gambling and substance use disorders; financial, relational, and emotional consequences; and the role of technology and accessibility in contemporary gambling behavior.
The course introduces several commonly used gambling screening and assessment tools and emphasizes the important distinction between screening, comprehensive assessment, and clinical diagnosis.
Participants will also learn practical ways to incorporate gambling-related questions into routine behavioral health assessment and identify when further assessment, intervention, or referral to a gambling-specific provider may be appropriate.
-

Jumana Murphy, LCSW, CASAC-G, is a psychotherapist, addiction specialist, and founder of Shine Psychotherapy based in in NYC and Fairfield, Connecticut. Her work focuses on addiction, problem gambling, trauma, attachment, and the relational patterns that often underlie compulsive and self-destructive behaviors.
Jumana is a Level 2 AEDP therapist and has extensive training in attachment theory, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Internal Family Systems (IFS). She integrates these approaches to help clients move beyond simply managing symptoms and toward understanding the emotions, relationships, protective strategies, and unmet needs that can contribute to addiction.
Central to Jumana’s clinical philosophy is the belief that authenticity is one of the most powerful tools we bring into the therapeutic relationship. Rather than approaching addiction solely as a behavior that needs to be stopped, she emphasizes connection, curiosity, compassion, and the creation of a therapeutic relationship in which clients feel safe enough to be honest about the parts of themselves they may have learned to hide.
Jumana also brings lived experience to her professional work and has been in recovery from substance use disorder since 2008. Her recovery informs her deep respect for the courage, vulnerability, and complexity involved in change while reinforcing her belief that clinicians can be both highly trained and genuinely human in the therapy room.
In addition to her clinical work, Jumana provides education and training to mental health professionals, including training related to problem gambling and addiction. She is passionate about helping clinicians recognize addiction earlier, understand the person beneath the behavior, and use authenticity and connection to create meaningful therapeutic change.
